The need for programmatic intervention,    structure and oversight is based on the    following documentation:

• As of 2004, the graduation rate in the Phoenix Union High School District was 58.3%


• In 2007,  31% of Arizona high school students had been involved in one of more  physical fights during the past 12 months


• In 2007, 30% of Arizona high school students had consumed 5 or more alcoholic beverages in a row on one or more of the past 30 days.


• In 2007, 37% of Arizona high school students were offered, sold, or given an illegal drug by someone on campus


• Youth from low-income homes have much lower participation rates in organized activities outside of school.  44.5% of youth from Arizona families living below the poverty level do not participate in organized activities compared to only 16.9% for those 200-300% above the federal poverty level.  Information from National Survey of Children’s Health website www.nschdata.org.

Success4Kids plays a leading role in raising community awareness of the need for structured after-school programs. Without our after school program, these teenagers, who may not be able to afford a more expensive after school activity, search for alternative recreation during the time of day that is the most dangerous for teenagers- after school. Statistically, uninvolved teenagers are more likely to engage in behaviors that put them and others at risk immediately after school dismissal.
