About Success4Kids Success4Kids (S4K) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that conducts youth outreach on the high school campuses in Phoenix, Arizona. S4K's "At- Risk Youth After-School Activity Program" provides youth ages 14-19 with the opportunity to play the sport of handball in a safe, structured environment with certified instructors. Through this after school program, Success4Kids provides opportunities for Phoenix youth to make healthy life choices and to learn to excel.

S4K handball programs also provide opportunities for youth to increase their self esteem. Participants learn to take responsibility for their behaviors and to respect themselves through good decision making. Positive new options are offered through creative projects, field trips, athletics and supportive relationships with caring adults. S4K provides a safe place where Phoenix youth discover new possibilities in life. The program offers after school enrichment programs, as well as all day intercessions during school breaks. Volunteers are encouraged to provide structure and build on each child's strengths.

The success of the S4K program can be seen in its alumni participants, many of whom return to the program as volunteer coaches. These former participants serve as strong youth role models and provide inspiration to high school participants. S4K alumni are often valuable resources to graduating S4K participants who are looking for higher education and jobs.

S4K at PHX rescue mission Community service is an important part of the S4K program. Participants frequently volunteer their time at the Phoenix Rescue Mission where they help sort canned and packaged goods and set up packages for upcoming food drives.

S4K Participation Children are referred to S4K through teachers, friends and/or administrators. Teachers assess that S4K is the best program for the child. When a child is accepted into the program a parent/guardian must agree to the following stipulations:

Youth participants are encouraged to attend on a regular basis. Youth receive points for every S4K event that they attend. These points are then tallied and used to determine the top participants. These participants earn the privilege to travel with S4K to handball tournaments outside of the Phoenix area.

Children must do their homework each day to be a part of the program. Our emphasis is on learning - not just getting the work done.

S4K has partnerships with several agencies and other non-profits to work one on one with a child or their families.

Success4Kids Standards Each S4K volunteer and youth participant in our program is encouraged to memorize a set of standards, which are based on integrity and respect. The following standards serve as a guide for how volunteers and participants should treat one another on a daily basis. As participants progresses through the program, S4K works to gradually expand this set of standards to other aspects of his or her life. The following are the S4K standards:

We value the space of ourselves and others and are careful not to intrude or injure each other. We are mindful of what is true and strive to be honest in word and deed.

We greet each other everyday with a smile and a handshake to strengthen the relationship between us. We honor and respect each other so we address one another with the proper language and speech.

We treasure our rich heritage and hold the cultures of all people in high regard. We strive to reflect our beauty both inwardly in our understanding and outwardly in our appearance.

"Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle."

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

I liked the combination of agility and athleticism that makes handball competitive. - Daivon W., Grade 11
